Hidden deep within the woods on the coast reside the shifters, or so a mother will tell a disobedient child. She’ll go on to tell them of the vile and despicable things they do to little boys who don’t do as they’re told.
Shifters certainly maintain a fairy-tale mystique to those who live within the towns and cities of the coast. Those who live nearer the wilderness, however, know the shifters as fierce hunters that roam the woods and wilds in nomadic groups. Sadly, in recent years more and more shifters are being forced to abandon this traditional way of life. They were persecuted and hunted, often simply for sport, by the Empire of Turin’s more cruel denzins. Many of their ancestral lands in the Stonefang Plains have been overrun by orcs or worse and elsewhere they are simply finding that the wilderness is becoming increasingly dangerous.
So it is many are finding homes, often putting up with a great deal of alienation, within human communities. There they are making a living as trappers, hunters and fishermen. It is not at all unusual for one to find it too hard to mesh with the civilised world and to seek a living as an adventurer.
